Culture shock, fast food-style
Mid-last week I was having one of those nights. Needed to get groceries, did not feel like heading to the grocery store or cooking, or hitting the 101 again, so I went for something nearby. That's right, it was time for my once-every-two-years (or year-and-a-half?) venture to... Maccas. (That's what Aussies call McDonald's, I like it. :))
Anytime I do make it there, I usually go for a McChicken. So there I was, driving along, pep talking my stomach into some fast food madness. I pulled up to the drive-thru speaker and menu. Scanning. Searching. Looking over the menu once more. Thinking I was hallucinating or part of a special drive-thru episode of "Punk'd". There was no McChicken to be found in the part of the menu where hamburgers, cheeseburgers, McNuggets, and all the usual fare is listed. Nothing in the combos. I'm speechless, and the people working the drive-through are likely thinking I've just arrived from another planet, because who doesn't know what to order at McDonald's?
So, I grab some chicken ranch BLT thing (promptly dispose of the bacon and eat the tomatoes separately). All the while I'm thinking, well that's strange, did they discontinue the McChicken? Considering how long it'd been since I'd been to a McD's, it was entirely possible. On my way home, I decided that this required some Wikipedia research.
Turns out that here in the U.S., the McChicken is a smaller version of what we have in Canada and part of the "Dollar Menu". Who knew?
I know, I should have just hopped back on the 101 and gone to In-N-Out Burger.
